KEEP CALM – WELCOME TO MIAMI

Professionals relocate when an opportunity presents itself at the right moment in their lives. At times it can feel like an ego boost, a welcome change, even an adventure. However, when the excitement settles reality steps in and it can be overwhelming. Moving to a new home, even if it’s across the street, is considered the third most stressful event in an individual’s life after death and divorce. When a person relocates, they move to a new home, a new city, and a new job. It doesn’t matter if you are single, or married with children; if you don’t take one day at a time, it can be stressful and scary.

My favorite psychologist and mystic, Anthony De Mello, SJ, wrote that people aren’t afraid of the unknown because you can’t possibly fear what you don’t know. He said that in essence people fear leaving the familiar. I am in complete agreement.

As a result, I have come to realize the best advice I can give my relocation clients is “Get familiar with Miami”. Get to know our neighborhoods, our traffic, and our multicultural communities. Once you get settled, let me introduce you to your neighbor, my hairstylist, and the best dry cleaner in town. I want to be the one that takes you to Versailles for your first Cortadito, and you can even call me when your babysitter doesn’t show up. In other words, making the unfamiliar “familiar” is the shortest way to calm.

So relax, come on down, get familiar with our city’s impulsive personality, generous character, big heart, and global atmosphere. With time you will adapt to its diversity and learn to love its constant evolution and sophisticated flair.

If you come with a positive attitude, an open mind, and are comfortable with “different” you will love it here. I must warn you, Miami’s pace has a beat of its own, so adapting to it is part of the experience. I assure you, it’s the kind of adventure that can become your greatest teacher. One thing is for sure, the city’s rhythm and its inclusive people are waiting to embrace those who come from across the country, or across the globe. Stay in the present moment, keep calm and enjoy the journey.
